What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal (also known as laser hair reduction) is the process of utilizing specially designed laser technology to permanently remove unwanted hair. This allows the individual the freedom to no longer worry about hair removal methods, such as waxing and shaving, which can cause irritation and leave behind stubbles of hair. With laser hair removal, the results are long lasting, revealing a smoother complexion year-round. Laser hair removal can safely and effectively treat almost any area of the body. Commonly treated areas include:
Bikini line
Underarms
Arms
Upper lip
Chin
Face
Brazilian
Legs
Back
Chest
Stomach
How does laser hair removal work?
During laser hair removal, a laser emits a gentle beam of light over the area where you want the hair removed. The light energy is then absorbed by the pigment within the hair, where it is converted into heat, effectively destroying the hair follicle, while also avoiding damage to the surrounding skin. The results are long lasting, preventing any future hair growth. Once a hair follicle is destroyed, it cannot regenerate or produce new hair … ever! That’s why laser hair reduction is a PERMANENT solution to the problem of unwanted hair. Please read our FAQs for further details or request more information below.
How to prepare for Laser Hair Removal
For the best results, you should:
Shave the area to be treated the day before or the day of treatment
Avoid tanning and self-tanners 4 weeks before and 2 weeks after your treatments
Avoid bleaching, waxing or tweezing the area at least 4 weeks before the treatments
Avoid sun exposure for 6 weeks before and after treatment
Avoid blood thinner medications, such as Aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs
What is the procedure like at American Laser Med Spa?
Before the start of the procedure, we ask our patients to shave the targeted area a day before, or the day of treatment. Removing this hair is crucial as surface hair can burn and cause skin damage. In addition, removing the hair above the skin with a razor is ideal as it does not disturb the hair shaft below the surface. At the start of the procedure, the laser will be adjusted according to the individuals skin color, hair color and hair thickness, as well as the location of the targeted hairs. A cool gel will then be applied to the surface layer of the skin, allowing for ample protection. Despite what you may have heard, the pain associated with laser hair removal is quite minimal. Many people do not feel the treatments at all. Our rule of thumb is, if it hurts, tell us! We can readjust our machine to make the experience as pleasant as possible for you. Each session will last between five minutes to one hour, depending on the size of the area being treated and the thickness of your hair. Your skin contains hundreds of thousands of hair follicles, so permanently removing hair often requires multiple sessions of laser treatment. You can expect to see hair loss occurring over the course of the next three weeks. We recommend for our patient to avoid sun exposure, both natural sunlight and tanning beds, for a couple weeks following treatment.
With Laser hair removal, patients can expect to receive an array of benefits including:
Precision: The laser can effectively target course hairs, without damaging the surrounding skin
Speed: Treatment is quick, as the laser can safely target multiple hairs at the same time
Long Lasting Results: Permanent hair removal
Smooth skin
No longer worry about the constant upkeep of unsightly, unwanted hair
No bumps
No stubbles
No nicks
No irritation
Are there any side effects with Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is today’s most popular method of removing unsightly or unwanted hair. It is truly fabulous! Although it has proven to be very effective and safe, it still has side effects and risks just like any other elective cosmetic procedure. Patient’s individual skin conditions, hair density, skin color, and the type of laser used play a role in final results.
Side effects are quite minor and usually temporary such as perifollicular edema (swelling of the dead hair follicle that looks like an ant bite) and erythema (redness). However, there are risks and side effects that can be more serious. Therefore, it is important to know about these side effects and their causes, so you may decrease your chances of experiencing them during or after treatments.
