It’s Not Just Normal Aging That Takes A Toll On Skin

Normal aging is what happens to skin without the help of overexposure to the sun, smoking, illness, obesity and accidents. Normal aging on its own can take huge toll on skin. But, when you add other factors like sun exposure, smoking, medications, yo-yo diets, alcohol and/or drug abuse and sun exposure to the mix and your skin can age much more rapidly.

Loss of fatty tissue between your skin and muscles is one of the primary factors in normal aging. Gravity, stress and repetitive facial movements, like smiling, frowning, wrinkling the brow, etc and the position you sleep also contribute to the formation of facial lines and wrinkles.

In general, as you age, the skin becomes rougher due to the development of lesions and benign tumors. Also, due to the loss of elastin and collagen, the elastic tissue, the skin becomes slack. As the surface layer of the skin this, the skin becomes more transparent too. And this is why it becomes so fragile and can easily bruise.

So, as you can see taking precautions and taking advantage of the many not-surgical procedures widely available today, skin does not have to succumb to the effects of aging. Daily use of sunscreen prevents sun damage. Moderate to no alcohol consumption will keep the skin hydrated and maintain a youthful glow.

Oral hygiene is important too. Bone loss in the jaw can cause puckering of the skin around the mouth. This typically becomes most evident after age 60.

Today, we have access to so many age-defying procedures and products that I’m convinced we will soon see an entire generation without the typical wrinkles and sagging skin we have gown to accept as part of the aging process. I believe ‘normal aging’ will soon have a very different definition. It’s a beautiful concept that I am privileged to be contributing to.
